Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle
![]() The parish of St. Matthew the Apostle was dedicated on November 1, 1840. The cornerstone was laid and blessed in 1893 and the first Mass celebrated in 1895. | ![]() The Cathedral was designed and built by the architect Christopher Grant LaFarge, who had worked on the plans for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City and the Cathedral of St. James in Seattle. | ![]() The Cathedral is made up of red brick, sandstone, and terra cotta with many Byzantine elements and semi-precious stones. It's design is in the shape of a Latin cross. |

![]() Many notable events have taken place in the Cathedral. These include the visit of Mother Teresa in 1974, the funeral of John F. Kennedy in 1963, and Masses by Pope John Paul II in 1979 and Pope Francis in 2015. |
